Description
A William Morris Sussex corner chair, with turned horizontal cresting rails. The three tall turned uprights with ring turned decoration which taper to small feet. The two backs infiled with finely turned cruciform supports, and retaining the original drop in rush seat. There are three turned stretcher bars on each side. The artist Ford Madox Brown is thought to have seen this chair being made by Henry Rich trug maker of East Hoathly, Sussex so the design was adopted and hand made by Morris and Company as an Arts and Crafts product. In good condition without breaks or repairs retaining the original patina commensurate with age use and as the images show.
The William Morris museum in Walthamstowe London have the same example though theirs is ebonised.
