An unusual pair of 18th century ash ladder fan back chairs.

Made in the Lancashire Cheshire area, and also known as ” shell spindle backs” because of the motif in the top rail. Illustrated in the “Gillows of Lancaster” archives and called a “Liverpool Chair” also “The English Regional Chair by Bernard Cotton”. They have knuckle turned cross rails in the backs, distinctive quarter round tops on the front legs and square lower back legs with a rake. The chairs are well patinated and a rich nutty colour.
